Pop culture round-up: ‘You’re Next,’ ‘Night Vale,’ music
Sorry I haven’t updated my sweet little blog in a bit, gentle readers. The fall arts season is going wide open, many of us reporters are working on our upcoming Fall Fashion special section and life’s been busy in general.
But I’ve loved a lot in pop culture lately, so let me share that with you.
“You’re Next” – I try to see just about every horror movie that hits the big screen (I know I’m about too late, but hey, “The Conjuring”? Love!), but I almost turned this one down. I’m not big on home invasion movies, and for some reason I have a fear of masks. I know, I don’t get it either. But I heard this movie was smart, so I gave it a shot and I absolutely loved it. I can’t stop talking about it, quoting it, everything.
It’s exactly what you think it is, from what you’ve probably seen of the trailers: a couple is celebrating their anniversary and invite their four grown children and their significant others over to celebrate, when a trio of invaders break in and attack the family. It’s creepy and not too gory. It doesn’t take itself too seriously; there are some really wonderful funny moments. Best of all, there is an amazing heroine in this movie.. I won’t give much away, but let me tell you, I know who I want to be for Halloween. It gave me the chills, made me laugh and made me cheer. Loved it.
“Welcome to Night Vale” – Man, I fought this one off for a WHILE. I saw a lot of friends and bloggers rave about this podcast, and I finally gave in to see what the hype was about. Now I’m addicted and I’ve even had two dreams about the fictional town of Night Vale.
The podcast is nice and short – 30 minutes at most – and is basically the community news of a weird little town in the desert called Night Vale (think of it as local news x “The X Files” or “The Twilight Zone”). The show’s host, Cecil, gives you the details on all of the town’s latest happenings, from the civilization discovered living beneath lane 5 at the local bowling alley, Old Woman Josie and her posse of angels, the Faceless Old Lady who lives in your house, or the mysterious Glow Cloud (ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD). It’s free, and new episodes are released twice a month.
Gosh, I’ve liked a lot lately. Click to see videos!
Valerie June, “You Can’t Be Told” – Have two ears and a soul? Then you’ll love this Memphis singer-songwriter’s sound.
Heliotropes, “The Dove” – I love Heliotropes’ new album, “A Constant Sea.” If you dig early Pumpkins, or any early 90s rock sound, check out the band.
Har Mar Superstar, “Lady, You Shot Me” – This should’ve been your summer jam.
Pearl Jam, “Mind Your Manners” – Punk + Pearl Jam! Yippee! Can’t wait to hear the whole album.
